Katrina, Jerry and John

On Tuesday of this week BCG had two high school students come to the office and shadow. Jerry and Katrina spend most of the morning with the group learning about how BCG operates and taking part is discussing goals and experiences. After Jerry and Katrina shared their goals for the future, they sat down with John, BCG’s Interactive Designer, for a 1 on 1 introduction to blogging. Next they sat down with Andrew, one of BCG’s designers, to watch and learn a bit about the branding process….along with a little basketball talk. Jerry and Katrina spent the last hour of the day walking to and eating lunch at Harry’s Country Club (in the City Market) with Christy, Andrew and John. Over all, a great experience for both Students and BCG!

Wizards, Thundersticks, and a Limo

Friday, April 24th, 2009

BCG decided to get out of the studio for some inspiration and took a trip to see the Kansas City Wizards play at Community America Ball Park. We had amazing seats and more importantly we shut out the New York Redbull!photo2limoimg_0017field side

How to clean your mouse

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

Have problem’s scrolling on your computer with the scroll ball in your mouse? I finally did some research because it has happened just about about every time I have gotten a new mouse. The ball gets clogged by the particles on your skin and stops rolling correctly on the screen. All you need is to take a towel and roll it over the scroll ball to wipe it clean! Do this a few times and it is back to normal!

Change is in the air at Boulevard Brewing Company

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

While I was out on my usual coffee shop visit this week, I noticed a beer I had never seen before gleaming on the shelf. What beer you ask? The Single-Wide IPA, now offered by Boulevard Brewing Company. Being a graphic designer by trade, it was the nice-looking label that initially grabbed my attention. I don’t have any doubt that the taste will be equally as amazing. This new IPA is the latest addition to their bottling line, but it is not the only thing that is new with the brewery. Apparently, after visiting their site, the factory is also offering a new, 16-ounce aluminum bottle for their Unfiltered Wheat Beer. Click here to view the aluminum bottle. The Brewery also got a face lift with the addition of a neon sign that spans across the entire building. Well, I must say, I now have more things to look forward to as summer quickly approaches.

The Importance of Validation

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

When I tackle a project, whether it’s work related or leisure related, I always want to make sure the time and effort put into it is top-notch. So naturally when I was hired here at BCG I wanted to make sure what I was doing for the company was done properly and to the highest quality. Unfortunately with wanting to strive for excellence you have to do your research and make sure you are on top of current trends. The first thing I notice when I was preparing to dive into my new job was that when building a Web 2.0 site, it’s got to be web compliant. In other words it needs to validate. W3 Schools the pioneer of web standards is a great place to start and I could blog all day about how important the concept of validation is, but I won’t bore you with the nerd talk. The rest of my studio gets enough of that. In short, validation means that your website is written properly and therefore will run on any browser efficiently. Now to the real issue of this blog. As a design company that offers website development it is super important you’re offering your clients a website that is well designed and coded properly. To go even further, it’s ultra important that your OWN company website validates correctly. Your companies website is the first thing a potential client will see. The design and code displays your talents as a company. If your own sites code isn’t written properly, how can you deliver a top-of-the-line site to them?

Maybe they should have Asked Jeeves first

Jeeves

Remember when you could go to askjeeves.com and the little butler guy would pop up at your service to answer any burning question you could come up with?

Well in ‘06, the company got bought out, they re-branded to ask.com, got rid of “Jeeves the butler” and became a Google look-a-like site. Oh, wait! I mean Mr. Jeeves “retired blissfully”<—

Now of course they conducted tons of market research, interviews, etc, etc to come to that decision but now…Jeeves is back! He’s fresh out of retirement like Jordan wearing #45 and he’s got a new look.

Why is he back? Is it because…

…Too many loyal customers complained about his absence?

…They are fighting like cats and dogs with MSN, Yahoo, everyone else and their mother for the 10% market share that Google does not own?

…Or maybe they realized that the little butler guy that may have annoyed some people was actually a creative, fun and personal touch that connected with searchers and differentiated it from the other engines?

I think the domain www.ask.com lends a lot of credibility to their operation but they should have stuck to their guns, stayed “different” and kept the iconic butler as part of their brand. Who knows how much brand loyalty they would have built by now.  Thru their research they asked a lot of people what they thought, but maybe they should have Asked Jeeves first.

I recently took another trip to Las Vegas and found Allegiant’s Check-In area. Too bad I didn’t find anyone holding the newest Sunseeker. I probably would have wanted a picture with them if i did.

I love Vegas
